After months of planning and getting my equipment the day of my long awaited Ireland hiking holiday finally arrived. We had a nice googbye-dinner at the fabulous TikiHeart burger place Thursday night and headed to the airport shortly after 9am.
Our flight was delayed by an hour an I was really ancious about catching our bus to Glengarriff in Dublin. Landed at exactly 1pm, queued for passport check at 1.15, got our luggage at 1.24 and arrived at the bus stop exactly at 1.30 to catch our bus. Wow. That went smoothly, haha.
Arriving one hour late at Cork we had no time to get some gas for our camping stove so we just changed to the bus going to Glengarriff. Had a wonderfull sunset view of Sugar Loaf Mountain and Hungry Hill at Bantry bay and arrived shortly before 9pm at Glengarriff.
Still bad luck followed us as Murohy's Hostel was closed for good as it seemd. So we had to take a B&B. For 40 Eur we got a small room a nice meal for dinner and breakfast in the morning. Plus the owner offered us to get a gas can for us in Bantry since no one had one in Glengarriff. We thanked him happily and headed off later than we wanted at around 11.30.
Saturday: Glengarriff - Adrigole
Unbelievable but true: Friday had sun and a clear blue sky. Saturday low hanging clouds and a rain that went from a drizzle to heavy showers back to a drizzle. Yeah!
First few miles were easy going on gravel roads. Then we went into "Mike's valley" which I knew from my Ireland trip last year. The path led upwards then straight into the low hanging clouds blocking our view for the rest of the journey. So we went uphill and downhill on drenched paths in the rain, through boggy fields always only seeing the next waymark when we reached the one before that.
We passed Sugar Loaf mountain without knowing it and had a very very difficult time on a steep path going down next to a fence with boulders, more bog holes and mud you can think of. Despite our late leave and the hard time on the trail we finally decended into Adrigole and the first farmer we met offered us to pitch our tent on one of his meadows.
Great! Pitched our tents had some dinner and went into the village pub to have a pint and dry some of our clothes. The latter one worked only halfway through since they did not have such a nice chimney last night's B&B had.
