Sunday: Adrigole - Castletownbere
Packed our stuff Sunday morning and started our second day on the Beara Way. The night was quite windy but mostly dry. But as I packed my tent rain set in again. Yeah. Got into my wet cloths and as we walked down into Adrigole the rain stopped again.
Had only a few showers today but some more wind. Went along muddy paths at the foot of Hungry Hill with his top hidden in the clouds. Hiked cross country a few miles until we arrived on top of a low hill with a beautiful view of the sea... only it was too foggy to see much. Must be stunning in clear weather!
The moment we stepped up on that pass heavy wind set in. And I mean like reeeally heavy! I hadn't closed my backpack's breast strap at that time and my 15 kilo backpack was almost blown off my back.
We fought our way down a gravel road now with the wind pushing us this way and that way until it finally calmed down. The path took a left turn away from the nice gravel road onto a hard track with lots of boulders and more mud and bogholes. So the going was pretty hard and we laboured for at least an hour until we unexpectedly got back to he main road leading to Castletownbere.
We heard that some parts of the Beara Way were changed. This must be one, since we were not supposed to be here. We walked for a few kilometers, then looked at the map again and decided to try one of the small roads leading back to our trail. Unfortunately the road was blocked so we turned back and tried to hitchhike which did jot work. Damn.
Okay. Walking 7km on the road to Castletownbere was really exhausting. Outside of town we passed a golf course/camping site but it was just too far outside of town. To make a long story short: hostel still closed, no other accomodation possible but a B&B. So we just asked for a lift at a pub and the owner really took us back to the camping ground. And he didn't even wanted the money we offered as compensation for his troubles.
We had the whole place to ourselves including the clubhouse. So we pitched our tents at the most beautiful spot with a nice view of the bay and dried our clothes in the bathroom of the clubhouse with the hand dryer, haha.
The sky had cleared and for once mostmof our stuff was dry and stayed that way.
